Maryland Humanities is pleased to announce the selection of The Book of Delights: Essays by Ross Gay for the 2021 One Maryland One Book program. Gay wrote one lyrical essay per day over a year and took the time to find “delights” in his everyday life.

More than 300 middle and high school students submitted projects online to present their extensive historical research at the 2021 Maryland History Day competition. The competition, virtual this year, is the culmination of a year-long program from Maryland Humanities.
In partnership with the Virginia Center for the Book at Virginia Humanities, Maryland Humanities co-hosts William G. Thomas III to share the intricate and intensely human story of enslaved families of Prince George’s County, Maryland and the hundreds of lawsuits they brought against slavery.

Cumberland Times-News featured the opening of our 2021–2022 Museum on Main Street tour, "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America." The tour opened at Allegany Museum in Cumberland. The museum's partners were Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland.

Voices and Votes: Democracy in America, a traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibition, is opening at Allegany Museum in Cumberland on April 17. The museum serves as the first venue of a five-stop tour of the state, presented through Maryland Humanities’ Museum on Main Street program.

National History Day® (NHD) selected Maryland teachers Dr. Jermaine Ellerbe, Michelle Holden, Joshua Pleasant, and Laya Theberge for an NHD spring professional development program. Ellerbe teaches in Silver Spring, Holden and Pleasant teach in Bowie, and Theberge teaches in Baltimore City.

Amie Dryer, a teacher at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, has contributed to Building a More Perfect Union, a new collection of lesson plans and essays from National History Day® (NHD) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Only 15 teachers nationwide were selected to participate.
