History comes alive with Maryland Humanities’ FREE Chautauqua living history performance series each July. Audience members meet historical figures and then participate in a thoughtful dialogue with each character. Chautauqua 2019 explores the power of water with three characters: Matthew Henson, an Arctic explorer, and the first African-American to reach the North Pole; Jacques Cousteau, a pioneer of underwater conservation and filmmaker; and Grace O’Malley, a 16th-century Irish pirate queen.

The performances will take place outside by the Steamboat Building. Please bring a folding chair and in case of severe weather, the program will be held in the Steamboat building auditorium.

Maryland Humanities is a statewide, educational nonprofit organization that creates and supports educational experiences in the humanities that inspire all Marylanders to embrace lifelong learning, exchange ideas openly, and enrich their communities.
