The Spirit of Jazz & Democracy fall residency at St. Mary’s College of Maryland continues with interactive lectures, performances, workshops, and master classes designed to inspire free-thinking, democratic engagement, and positive social and political progress.

In the workshop,”Jazz Is Democracy,” master drummer Paul F. Murphy, jazz historian and drummer Dominic Fragman, ’07, and philosopher Sybol Anderson examine the relationship between the individual and the ensemble. In jazz, soloists interact either to flow with the ensemble or to create and develop new structures that can influence the group’s direction and style. Anyone can innovate.

Participants in this workshop explore the congruent goals and outcomes of performing jazz and democracy: the freedom of individuals to explore and express new ideas in harmony with the collective—stimulating progress, expanding ideas, uplifting the mind and spirit, and enhancing the well-being of communities.
