St. Clement’s Island, Archaeology, and the Gateway to Indian Country

November 6 @ 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join the St. Mary’s County Library, along with Dr. Julie King of the College of St. Mary’s, in discussing the relations between the early English settlers of Maryland and the Indigenous Peoples.
In March 1634, English settlers landed at St. Clements Island, a story all Marylanders know. But why did the colonists choose St. Clement’s Island as their initial beachhead? The answer might surprise you. Archaeology is revealing the presence of large, well-populated Indigenous towns all along this portion of the Potomac River and west, many with histories dating back centuries and even millennia.
