A Celebration of Piscataway Culture

November 8, 2023 @ 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Learn about Maryland’s Indigenous people through song, dance

Natalie Standingontherock, a born member of the Wild Turkey Clan, Cedarville Band of Piscataway people, will share Piscataway culture through song and dance.

Natalie Standingontherock is a born member of the Wild Turkey Clan, Cedarville Band of Piscataway people.
She is the Tribal Chair for the clan/band and has traveled as far away as Poland and Israel representing Maryland’s Indigenous people. She also served as the Director for the Piscataway Indian Museum that recently closed. Natalie has been a part of a clan and organization dedicated to teaching the history and culture of the Chesapeake Bay region.

The Maryland Indian Heritage Society, along with the Cedarville Band of the Piscataway Indians, hosted a powwow at the Piscataway Indian cultural center and Museum in Waldorf, Md for 30 years. Natalie has always enjoyed sharing the culture through song and dance. This program will explore the purpose of a powwow including powwow clothing -vs-traditional clothing and musical instruments. The audience will learn a few powwow and traditional Chesapeake region dances. The program is meant for all ages. Please join us for a celebration of Maryland’s Indigenous people.

This program is funded by Maryland Humanities as part of the One Maryland One Book (OMOB) program. This year’s OMOB selection is There There by Tommy Orange. This book is a wondrous and shattering award-winning novel that follows twelve characters from Native communities: all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, all connected to one another in ways they may not yet realize.
